Fifteenth Annual
CBFV General Assembly
March 14 and 15, 2008
First Baptist Church,
Waynesboro

The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me because God anointed me.
He sent me to preach good news to the poor,
heal the heartbroken, announce freedom to all captives,
pardon all prisoners. God sent me to announce the year of
his grace— a celebration of God's destruction of our enemies—
and to comfort all who mourn, to care for the needs of all who
mourn in Zion, give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes,
messages of joy instead of news of doom, a praising heart
instead of a languid spirit. Rename them "Oaks of Righteousness"
planted by God to display his glory. They'll rebuild the old ruins,
raise a new city out of the wreckage. They'll start over on the
the ruined cities, take the rubble left behind and make it new.
Isaiah 61:1-4 (The Message Translation)

The 15th Annual General Assembly began on Friday with Fellowship and the Resource Fair.

Business Session I was held to review the 2007-08 fiscal year and to review proposed changes in the By-Laws. Highlights of these changes (which were adopted in the Business Session II) were adding an Advisory Council comprised of elected officers and Administrator and Reference and Referral Administrator as non-voting ex-officio members. Also, the position of Media and Publicity Officer to be deleted with the duties of communication falling under the Immediate Past Moderator. Following the Business Session were well attended Regional meetings.

We had eight exciting Workshops to choose from ranging from the Arts, Prayer, Grief, Youth Missions, Destinations, and MDGs.  Sessions were held on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Friday evening we met for a wonderful catered dinner, fellowship and program.

We heard updates from
George Pickle, CBF Chaplain Ministry

Layne Smith, CBF Peer Learning Groups

Greg Smith, Virginia Latino Network.

"The Awakening Praise Team" from First Baptist Church inspired us with song and music.

Darrel Cook, Collegiate Ministry, Virginia Tech was our keynote speaker. He eloquently brought to life our theme scripture as he talked to us about "Beauty after the Ashes".

Folks gathered for Fellowship in the Resource Fair to conclude the evening's program. Walt Cummings provided time for folks to "Meet with the Moderator".

Saturday morning we gathered in the Resource Fair enjoying coffee, fruit and pastry provided by Virginia Baptist Women in Ministry.

After the final Workshop sessions we met for Business Session II voting on the By-Law changes and the 2008-09 Budget and electing officers and new at-large representatives: Bland Campbell, Nancy Stanton McDaniel and Joshua Pittman to the Coordinating Council.
Prior to the session we heard about some of Virginia's church start/growth iniatives.

Bruce Hunter talked to us about Crossroads Community Church

Fred Lane explained the new changes for CrossWind Community Church

Joshua Pittman talked about a partnership between CBFV and BTSR to make it possible for him to be pastor.

The Business Session closed with the installation of our new officers: Jack Mercer-Moderator, Rob Fox-Moderator Elect, Ka'thy Gore Chappell-Secretary, Dennis Sacrey-Treasurer.

Worship opened with Moments of Mediation by Barbara Moore, guest organist. Tina Bailey did a very moving Theme Interpretation to "Ranannu" (Sing with Joy).

Rob Nash inspired us with his sermon "Beauty is in the Ears of the Beholder" his message clearly heard by all.

During communion all were invited to add a brush stroke to a painting provided by Jonathan and Tina Bailey representing Restoring Beauty to a Broken World.

As we joined together in our closing hymn Tina lightly blended the strokes and then removed the hidden tape to reveal "Beauty Restored to a Broken World."

.

We were truly blessed to be in fellowship at this meeting - hope you can join us next year.
