Embrace the World

“Embrace the world”
was said to me,
as though such a thing
could simply be
a quick surrounding
of a crowded sphere,
much like the hugging
of a favorite tree.

But clasping the world
begins with a tear,
enfolding the cross
of the Christ so dear
who gave of Himself
to show humankind
a love so profound it has no peer.

I embrace His poverty,
and there I find
Arab women so poor
as to be maligned.
And hugging to myself
the Shepherd’s great care
it is the Bedouin who comes to mind.

I embrace His thirst,
then am keenly aware
for fifty five million
pure water is rare.
I hold in my arms
His death – so cold,
and I weep for India Christians
whose fate is unfair.

Embracing the world –
It will take a toll,
but love finds a way
to those yet untold –
For I embrace the world
when Him I enfold.
Yes, I embrace the world
when Him I enfold.

Poem by Chris Ahleman, a member of Ashworth Road Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Current is CBF’s network of young Baptists. Each fall we coordinate a simultaneous mission project called “eleven on 11.” It is a time when groups from all over the US serve in their communities on the same day. It is a way for CBF and young Baptists to be Christ in their Communities. Although the purpose is to encourage the participation of those 40 and below, all are welcome to join in.

CBF of Georgia Requests Disaster Response Teams

Big Stone Gap, VA Tornado Rebuild

A tornado struck the southwest Virginia community of Big Stone Gap in early March. Approximately 60 homes were damaged or destroyed, some of which were either uninsured or underinsured.

Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief and construction missions volunteers in the Southwest Region, with primary involvement from the Wise and Clinch Valley Baptist Associations, will be assisting two families by building houses for each. Funding for the materials is being provided by the home owners. Volunteers are providing the labor. VBMB Disaster Relief is providing $ 5000 to launch the project and to provide for needs that will allow the volunteers to do the work. The houses will be framed in early June.

Teams of volunteers are needed in June and July to help complete the houses.
Craig Waddell is the VBMB contact for those interested in forming a team. Craig can be reached at craig.waddell@vbmb.org and at 1.800.255.2428 or 804.915.5000.
